This exhibition was an interesting mix of organic blood red womb like textures (Scary and deeply Effecting!) and monolithic all red engulfing balloon like structures. All contrasted with high shine bright mirrored surfaces.
The mirrored sculptures had everyone in the gallery interacting with them- young and old. The exhibition was exploring ideas of voids- reflecting both ourselves and our environments in a very Alice in Wonderland through the looking glass manner. This instantly made me think of Nietzsche in hindsight. To paraphrase I stared into the void and the void stared back. This famous quote from philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's warning in Beyond Good and Evil: "Whoever battles monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster and if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze also into you." There was a sense of Nihilism at work in the exhibition but I think that was countered by the easy collective joy of the public in having the world turned upside down and reflected.
It was amazing seeing how the two pieces situated on the roof beautifully reflected the sunny Southbank skyline was a complete highlight.
A lovely day with @rebeccahale_costume my very first time at an Anish Kapoor exhibition! Xxx #anishkapoor #haywardgallery #artpass #sculpture
